history

Upon finding to her dismay that her daughter has been lost in the festival melee, totally heart broken, the mother called out to Durgadevi, the presiding deity of Arathil Badrapuram Temple and started wailing over her loss. Feeling pity for the heartbroken mother Arathil Bhagavathi had set out to console her, accompanied by her subordinate deities Pazhassi Bhagavathy, Kakkara Bhagavathiy, Kelan Kulangara Bhagavathy, Sree Bhootham, Sasthappan, Gulikan, Vishnu moorthi and the other heavenly entourage.

The head of the Candoth family who had been looking after the lost and found child with utmost care and affection had by this time gained the appreciation of the Goddess, who in turn appeared to him and to the mother of the child in their sleep and showered her blessings upon them. The Goddess consoled the mother and assured her in a pacifying tone that the child will face no danger whatsoever and that she will come to see her mother one day adding that the mother may live in total peace without worrying for the child who shall be well taken care of.

The head of the Candoth family in his dream vision Goddess said that she has reached in the vicinity of the Candoth family with her entourage in seach of the child and that she has decided to settle down around his family as protector and guardian of the Candoth family members. And she added declaring that henceforth the Candoth family shall be popularly known with her name appended to it as Arathil Candoth.

To know the verisimilitude of the dream, the head of Candoth family summoned his family astrologers. They also concurred the veracity of the vision and declared that the message is true and the promises of the Goddess will be tangibly felt very soon. The astrologers also added that it is the wish of the Goddess that a Temple may be built to enshrine her and all the rituals in this connection be performed in her honour, including the celebration of the annual Thira festival in total grandeur. This is how the temple that we see today has came into being.
