Arathil
Candoth family and the protecting family deity, Arathil
Bhagavathi are inseperably linked in such a way that
one cannot think of one without remembering other.
The Golden era of the candoth family
begins with the arrival of the Arathil Bhagavathy from
the place called Arathil. From then on, the history
of the family is inscribed in golden letters as one
can see it today. We will begin with the history of Arathil
Devi the presiding Goddess of Arathil Candoth Family
today.
Let us leaf through the history of
the Arathil family. There are two stories substantiating
how the house of Candoth became to be known as Arathil
Candoth. The first one goes to narrate that as Candoth
family did not have a female member, it had adopted
a girl from Arathil and that the Goddess has accompanied
the girl along with the Subordinate Devas.
The second story appears to have better
credibility and rationale. Thrikkaikkunnu Shiva Temole
was one among the many Temples that the Kottayam Royal
family had kept under its control. The folklore has
it that this Temple's festival which was celebrated
for a period spanning 14 days had been an extravaganza
replete with pomp and pageantry and that people from
far and wide used to converge on this temple to witness
this gala affair in thousands, to feast upon the many
splendoured pragramme that included the local flavoured
koodiyattam, Kathakali and the congregation of the scholars,
not to mention to devour to their heart's content the
grand feast specially catered for this occasion. It
is said that on a festival day, at the end of the programmes
a young girl was found unescorted and standed wailing
to her highest possible pitch, whom the compassionate
head of the Candoth family took into his care and took
to Candoth house
